A British woman has been shot dead by a gunman in Pakistan after a group burst into her home in the early hours of the morning, according to reports.
The 26-year-old victim, who has been identified in local media as Maya, was shot in the head in her apartment in Lahore yesterday.
The killing happened two months after she arrived in the country from Britain, investigators said.
In the days before her death, she had told her uncle that two men were threatening her, according to Independent Urdu.
The uncle, who has not been named, told police that Maya was being threatened by a man whose marriage proposal she had refused, while another friend also wanted to marry her.
He said he received a call from her father in London saying that she had been killed at around 2pm on Monday.
According to a First Incident Report (FIR) filed by Maya’s uncle, the killers are believed to have burst into her home between 4am and 5am local time.
Police station house officer Qasim, who said he rushed to the scene, told The Independent: “The woman had a bullet wound to the shoulder, but the exact cause of death will be known after her post-mortem and forensic report, whether the death was due to a gunshot wound or whether her throat was strangled.”
Detectives said two suspects have been identified, and the victim’s family have been informed.
Police Superintendent Sayyed Ali told Dawn.com: “We are also after two suspects and will share further details at a later stage.”
The victim was living with a friend, who had an adjoining room, the superintendent said, but stated that they had not been able to provide any useful information about the attack.
An unidentified caller alerted police to the murder, investigators said.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has been contacted for comment.
