The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign from the United Nations running from November 25 till 10 December, and White Ribbon Day marks the beginning of it.

Run by the White Ribbon UK charity, the global movement works to end men’s violence against women by raising awareness against the issue, educating boys and men as well as encouraging people to come together to put an end to it.

Each year, the event focuses on a specific theme or message, and this year is it #AllMenCan, which was started in March of this year, after the assault and murder of Sarah Everard brought to light the experiences of many women who had faced violence or threat from men.

What is White Ribbon Day and why was it created?

According to the White Ribbon Day website, the campaign aims to “get the message out that men’s violence against women and girls must end” and that “all men can make a difference”.

The event calls upon people in the communities, organisations and workplace to take collective action and say ‘no’ to violence against women.

It asks for men to take a stand with the message : “As we move towards the end of the year we want as many men as possible to think carefully and make the White Ribbon Promise to never commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women .

When did White Ribbon Day’s campaign start and how is it marked?

The origin of White Ribbon Day goes to December 1989 after instance of misogyny at the École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, referred to as the Montreal Massacre, where twenty-five-year-old Marc Lépine killed 14 women because of his hatred toward women.

The campaign is active in over 60 nations across the world including Canada, Australia, Pakistan, Italy and the UK, and is marked by encouraging men to wear white ribbons as a symbol of their opposition to violence against women.
